Successfully filming alone!
Today was my first day of filming! Filming without a partner or a group does prove to be challenging at first. Since I am used to working in a group or with a partner, it was definitely a bit of shock of how much work goes into filming, especially. There are issues with not being able to see if you are filming yourself within the frame or at the correct angle. There are also issues with not knowing if the clips filmed will flow cohesively once put together during the editing stage. Additionally, there is also the issue of having to remember what exactly it is I or others are filming during the filming process. The quite simple solution I’ve found to this is bringing a picture or a physical copy of the storyboard paper itself. This is an immense help while filming. Overall, it is manageable and not too difficult, once you get the hang of it. I filmed the first 30 seconds of the opening sequence today. While filming, I did use a tripod and propped my camera onto solid surfaces, like inside the glove compartment of a car and on a garden gnome on the sidewalk. I am beginning to think creatively and use my surroundings to my advantage. This is something working alone has taught me. Moving on, the footage filmed today included the title slide and the beginning of the shots that will have a monologue overlapped onto it. I’ve decided to film the audio for the monologue separately from the visual shots of the film. I decided to do this for a variety of reasons. By filming the clips separate from the monologue, I am able to work more efficiently and get the film done according to the schedule. This also helps me stay organized and on task with filming. All in all, today was a successful filming day. I was able to get a part of my filming done. I was also able to start figuring out a system of filming that works best for me. Being a full-time student does impair my ability and free time available to film freely. However, I am able to film sometimes after school, as well as on the weekends.
