Costumes (C): Films depend on the costumes of the characters to create the fantasy world within the film. Costumes, alongside makeup, help visually transform actors into characters. For example, the costumes used in Pan’s Labyrinth helped create the 

Lighting (L): Lighting in fantasy films are usually darker and dimmer, with bright lighting once in a while to signify something extreme is occurring. 

Acting (A):

Makeup (M): Films depend on the makeup of the characters to create the fantasy world within the film. Makeup is often used to transform actors into their roles. For example, makeup was used in the “Harry Potter” films to transform the actor, Ralph Fiennes into his role, Voldemort. 

Props (P): Used to identify characters as protagonists vs. antagonists and their personalities. For example, in the “Harry Potter” films, wands are used to differentiate between good and bad wizards and witches.

Set (S): Fantasy films are usually set in another world, so sets are extravagant and provide the illusion necessary to create the “other” world. Some sets are located in old castles or forests, while others are located in cities or under ground.

What elements of the genre that you like, and would you use?

I like the elements of magic, escapism and ominous. I would use escapism and ominous elements in my own film.

What  elements of the genre do not appeal to you, and would you stay away from?

I don’t have any particular elements I don’t like, but I would stay away from magic. It does not really go with my film idea.
